Pressure vs Depth

Relate hydrostatic pressure to liquid density and depth.

Open Pressure vs Depth in workspace

Learning objectives

Use the prepared scene to investigate the following physical ideas:

  • Hydrostatic pressure
  • Fluid density
  • Gauge pressure

Available controls

The workspace lets you pause and play the scene, select its objects, edit the starting properties described below, reset the scene, and inspect configured live graph measurements.

  1. Use the pressure sensor at different heights.
  2. Change liquid density in the jar inspector.
  3. Compare pressure readings.

Expected observations

  • Pressure rises with vertical depth.
  • A denser liquid creates a steeper pressure gradient.
  • The free-surface gauge pressure is approximately zero.

Model limitations

The model assumes a static, incompressible liquid and reports idealized gauge pressure. Dynamic flow and atmospheric variation are not included.

Simulation output is educational and approximate. Verify important results with independent calculations or physical measurements.
