Compression Spring
Drop a mass onto a spring platform and observe damped compression.
Open Compression Spring in workspaceLearning objectives
Use the prepared scene to investigate the following physical ideas:
- Compression springs
- Restoring force
- Damping
Available controls
The workspace lets you pause and play the scene, select its objects, edit the starting properties described below, reset the scene, and inspect configured live graph measurements.
- Move the test mass to change its drop height.
- Press Play.
- Watch the platen compress, rebound, and settle.
Expected observations
- The spring produces an opposing restoring force.
- The mass and platen oscillate briefly.
- Damping removes energy without freezing the spring.
Model limitations
The spring response is linear and the platform is represented by constrained rigid bodies. Real coil geometry and material fatigue are outside the model.
Simulation output is educational and approximate. Verify important results with independent calculations or physical measurements.
