Balloon in an Accelerating Jar

Study effective gravity, pressure gradients, buoyancy, drag, and tension in an accelerating frame.

Open Balloon in an Accelerating Jar in workspace

Learning objectives

Use the prepared scene to investigate the following physical ideas:

  • Effective gravity
  • Pressure gradients
  • Buoyancy in an accelerating frame

Available controls

The workspace lets you pause and play the scene, select its objects, edit the starting properties described below, reset the scene, and inspect configured live graph measurements.

  1. The frame acceleration starts disabled.
  2. Select the jar and enable acceleration in its inspector.
  3. Try left, right, upward, and downward acceleration.

Expected observations

  • Without explicit acceleration, the apparatus has no sideways drift.
  • The free surface tilts perpendicular to effective gravity.
  • The balloon moves opposite the dense-fluid pressure-gradient direction until constrained.

Model limitations

This is a two-dimensional educational model with simplified fluid drag, a prescribed frame acceleration, and an idealized tether.

Simulation output is educational and approximate. Verify important results with independent calculations or physical measurements.
