Liquid Displacement
Measure how submerged volume raises the liquid level.
Open Liquid Displacement in workspaceLearning objectives
Use the prepared scene to investigate the following physical ideas:
- Displaced volume
- Fluid level
- Archimedes' principle
Available controls
The workspace lets you pause and play the scene, select its objects, edit the starting properties described below, reset the scene, and inspect configured live graph measurements.
- Note the starting fill level.
- Press Play to lower the solid into the jar.
- Compare fill level with submerged volume.
Expected observations
- The surface rises as the body becomes submerged.
- The rise is set by displaced volume and cavity area.
- A fully submerged object displaces its external volume.
Model limitations
The vessel has an idealized cavity and the liquid surface is calculated rather than simulated with individual fluid particles.
Simulation output is educational and approximate. Verify important results with independent calculations or physical measurements.
